With a recent rise in breast cancer in women, every two women are newly diagnosed with breast cancer, one woman dies of it in India. Breast cancer is caused due to detection of malignant or cancer cells in the tissues of the breast.

Breast cancer is often thought of as something that only affects women, but men can get it in rare cases. It grows in the small amount of breast tissue men have behind their nipples. It usually happens in men over 60, but can very occasionally affect younger men. There are several types of Breast Cancer. The type of breast cancer depends on where in the breast it is situated and some other factors.

Breast cancer sometimes gets detected after symptoms appear, but many women with breast cancer show no signs or symptoms. This is why regular check-ups are important. Some of the symptoms that might go unnoticed until they become severe include a lump or mass in the breast that feels different from the surrounding tissue, change in the shape, size, or appearance of the breast, discharge from the nipple, breast rash, etc.

Usually, surgery and radiation are the most sought out treatments to treat the tumour without affecting the rest of the body. But the actual fact is, the kind of treatment depends on the type of breast cancer and its stage. Other factors, include overall health, menopause status, and personal preferences which are also taken into account while recommending the treatment style. Most common therapies include Chemotherapy, Hormone Therapy, Targeted Drug Therapy and Immuno- therapy.

In some cases, drugs too are prescribed to treat breast cancer. This kind of treatment falls under systemic therapies where medicines reach cancer cells almost anywhere in the body via the nervous system. Some of the medication prescribed is oral, while some are injected into a muscle, or put directly into the bloodstream. Depending on the type of breast cancer, different types of drug treatments are used.

Some of the common side effects of these drugs can include fatigue, cough, nausea, skin rash, poor appetite, constipation, and diarrhoea. Other, more serious side effects occur rarely like hair-loss.
