Alcohol and Blood Pressure: What is the Link?

Alcohol abuse can cause blood pressure to rise dangerously.

Blood pressure temporarily rises when more than three beers are consumed in one sitting.

Frequent binge drinking can cause blood pressure to rise over time.

The definitions of excessive drinking may be useful in determining how much alcohol is too much.

For women, binge drinking is defined as four drinks or more within two hours, while for men, it’s five drinks or more.

Up to one drink per day for women and two for males is considered moderate drinking.

More than three drinks per day for women and four for males is considered heavy drinking.

Heavy drinkers who reduce their consumption to moderate levels can reduce their systolic blood pressure

measurement by about 5.5 mm Hg and their diastolic blood pressure reading by about 4 mm Hg.

Avoid drinking alcohol or limit your alcohol consumption if you have high blood pressure. That entails up to one

drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for males for healthy individuals.

Remember that alcohol has calories and might result in weight gain. High blood pressure is a risk factor for weight

gain. Alcohol and some blood pressure drugs may interact. It can change the amount of the drug in the body or

intensify side effects.
